Is Name Fortune Testing Accurate? A Rational Look
Analyzing name test reliability from history, statistics, and psychology
How Name Fortune Scoring Works
Mainstream name test tools use the Five Grid method, calculating Heaven, Person, Earth, External, and Total grids from Kangxi stroke counts, then scoring based on the 81 numerology system and Sancai five-element configuration. This method was created by Japanese scholar Kumazaki Kenou in the early 1900s.
The logic: more auspicious numbers and harmonious element configurations yield higher scores (0-100), with 80+ considered a good name.
Is There Scientific Evidence
From a strict scientific perspective, the 81 numerology meanings lack statistical validation. No large-scale studies show significant correlation between specific stroke counts and personal achievement, health, or marriage outcomes.
However, names do have psychological effects: sound and meaning influence first impressions (Rosenthal effect), affecting social interactions. Pleasant, meaningful names offer real social advantages — but from cultural psychology, not stroke numerology.
Should You Trust Name Scores
Treat name testing as traditional cultural entertainment, not a basis for life decisions. High scores shouldn't cause complacency; low scores shouldn't trigger anxiety. Destiny depends on BaZi, family, personal choices, and timing.
Use name tests as a window into traditional culture or one reference dimension for naming — not the sole criterion. A good name balances sound, meaning, writing convenience, and avoiding bad homophones.
How to Use Name Test Tools Rationally
First, understand the algorithm. Our name test uses the Five Grid method with Kangxi strokes — see the Five Grid Method guide for full calculation rules.
Second, consider BaZi favorable elements. For serious naming, use a BaZi chart tool to analyze favorable elements, then choose characters with matching five elements — more meaningful than numerology alone.
Third, keep an entertainment mindset. Results are for reference only, not the sole basis for renaming or life decisions.
