What Is the Big Five Personality Test (OCEAN)?
The Big Five — also called the Five-Factor Model or OCEAN — is the most widely replicated personality framework in psychological research. It measures five independent dimensions: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. Unlike type-based systems such as MBTI, the Big Five scores each trait as a continuous spectrum, which is why researchers prefer it for studying how personality relates to career outcomes, relationships and well-being.
How Our Free Big Five Test Works
You answer 30 statements on a 5-point scale — 6 items per trait, including reverse-scored items that guard against straight-line responding. Your raw score for each trait is normalized to a 0–100 percentage so you can compare across dimensions. The whole test takes about 3 minutes and runs entirely in your browser; no answers are uploaded.
The Five Dimensions (OCEAN) Explained
Openness (O) reflects curiosity, imagination and appetite for new experiences. Conscientiousness (C) covers organization, self-discipline and dependability — the trait most consistently linked to academic and career achievement. Extraversion (E) is social energy and assertiveness. Agreeableness (A) is empathy, trust and cooperation. Neuroticism (N) is emotional responsiveness and sensitivity to stress — high N is not a flaw; it is an early-warning system when managed well. Every trait is a spectrum: most people land mid-range, and extremes are neither good nor bad on their own.
